Dr Brendan Clyde Josey
Dr Brendan Clyde Josey is a research fellow in the Informal Cities Lab at Monash University. Dr Josey is a development practitioner and academic with a focus on planetary health, climate change adaptation and sustainable development in vulnerable communities in the Asia-Pacific region. Brendan has disciplinary expertise in Architecture, specialising in transdisciplinary research that explores socio-cultural intersections between the built environment and sustainable development through impact-based implementation research projects. He is presently involved in the Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments project, and Citarum Action Research Program.
Dr Josey’s ongoing research and teaching explores the relationality of informality, housing, sustainable development, and climate-change adaptation strategies in the Asia-Pacific region. Brendan has extensive international experience having been involved in projects in Indonesia (South Sulawesi and West Java), Fiji, Central Australia, Papua New Guinea, Sweden, Brisbane, Melbourne, and regional Victoria. Brendan has also taught extensively in architectural design and theory at the University of Melbourne, and Monash University. In addition to his academic roles, Brendan provides design consultation and fabrication through small practice. Brendan’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Environments (B.Env. Arch), and a Masters of Architecture (M.Arch Melb) from the University of Melbourne, and a Doctorate (Ph.D) from Monash University, Melbourne.
