About

Monash Urban Lab is concerned with the design of urban environments, particularly the interplay between people, communities, built environments and broader society.

We explore design typologies that can better respond to the complex mix of social, environmental, economic and regulatory aspects of sustainable living and we develop design research that is often prototyped and tested in the real world, meaning that our research has a direct impact on improving the everyday lives of individuals and local communities.

We work from detail to strategy – from the design of spaces, through to the development of policies and guidelines, considering  both the ‘hard infrastructure’ of  housing, through to the ‘soft’ infrastructure’ of systems and services needed to make our cities work. This includes designing for the flexible arrangement of rooms, and making individual homes adaptable and accessible; through to improving the livability of suburbs, neighbourhoods, precincts and regional towns; right up to the systems-thinking around social and spatial infrastructure that’s needed to support genuine, ecological and environmental repair for cities of the future.

Our key research areas include:

  • affordable medium-density infill development, planning and housing design
  • design for ageing populations and people with disability
  • water-sensitive urban design, regenerative design and landscape
  • remaking post-industrial places, urban planning and transport
  • regional regeneration, community-led and co-design process
