Dr Jack Tooley is a Senior Lecturer of Spatial Design at Monash University and an interdisciplinary design academic, practitioner and researcher.
Jack has over 14 years’ experience teaching and practising across architecture, interior design, and project management. With a PhD in Spatial Sociology and an MPhil in Architectural Psychology, Jack’s expertise lies in understanding how environments shape—and are shaped by—human behaviour, social judgement, and cultural context.
At UniSA and Curtin University, Jack led award-nominated curriculum innovations that translated contemporary challenges into design teaching strategies. His constructivist learning model integrates students’ lived experiences into the design process, producing studios that have been recognised in journals such as the Journal of Interior Design. He is also active in academic leadership, having stewarded course revitalisation initiatives, international study opportunities, and early-career research advocacy.
Jack’s research draws on psychological and sociological theory to investigate spatial equity and the role of design in promoting community well-being. He has secured several competitive private research grants for projects spanning the construction and mining sectors, as well as the future of queer spatial typologies.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on bridging psychology with spatial design, including contributions to Theory and Society, The International Journal of Community Well-Being, and Cogent Social Sciences, where he also serves as a guest advisor.
Jack is committed to research, teaching and practice that connect theory with real-world spatial and social challenges.
