Alfred Research Alliance

The Alfred Research Alliance in Prahran, Melbourne, brings together the world-leading research, education, and clinical services clustered around The Alfred Hospital to achieve better health outcomes — sooner.

Monash University, Alfred Health, the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, and the Burnet Institute are all members of the Alliance.

The precinct is home to award-winning researchers and health practitioners, with expertise in biomedical, translational, clinical, and public health research. Their mentorship and expertise is available to Honours students enrolling in either of the two Monash Schools at the precinct: the Monash School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and the Monash School of Translational Medicine.

(Note that while projects/supervisors may be offered through the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute or Burnet Institute, students will need to be enrolled via Monash University.)

Precinct benefits

By collaborating to offer Honours opportunities, the Alliance broadens the diversity and number of projects available to students, and expands access to highly specialised technology and equipment across the precinct.

Our co-location with ‘The Alfred’ gives us the unique opportunity for a hospital-centred approach, where research can be grounded in real-world problems, and providing access to a convenient source of patient and health data.

As one of Australia’s busiest hospitals, The Alfred offers health services in almost every specialist medical, surgical and allied health discipline. It also allows the latest advances in health and medical research to be rapidly translated into the best possible clinical care and health outcomes for the community – locally, nationally, and internationally.

The precinct is a vibrant and exciting hub of health and medical research and practice, home to numerous internationally renowned clinical trials and global game-changers. It’s a fantastic place to start building your networks as a budding researcher, clinician, or health practitioner.

In addition to this, the precinct is ideally located just five kilometres from Melbourne’s city centre, and is well serviced by tram, bus and trains.
