The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine is responsible for providing anaesthesia services within the operating theatres at all Bayside sites (Alfred, Caulfield, Sandringham), including The Alfred’s trauma centre, endoscopy, cardiology, and radiology departments. The Department provides a consultant service to The Alfred Preadmission Clinic, focusing on preoperative evaluation and investigation. Additionally it includes a Pain Unit, which provides an acute pain service for the management of advanced methods of pain control (epidurals, PCA), and some involvement with patients with chronic pain.
Professor Paul Myles is the Chair of the Academic Board of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, as well as the current Director of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the Alfred. In addition, Professor Myles is an Australian National Health & Medical Research Council Practitioner Fellow.
