Organisational Structure

Participating organisations
The Monash Lung and Sleep Department is located at Monash Medical Centre and is a site for both clinical and basic sleep disorders research. Current research strengths include: multi-centre clinical trials in sleep apnoea, cardiovascular consequences of sleep apnoea, obesity and sleep apnoea, endotyping/phenotyping of sleep apnoea including novel methods of assessing the causes of sleep apnoea, and finally respiratory control and upper airway physiology. The Monash Lung and Sleep Department is a large and dynamic sleep unit, with a clinical patient load of over 3,000 sleep patients per year. The sleep unit works closely with Monash University and has academic clinicians experienced in the management of the full breadth of sleep disorders.
The Melbourne Children's Sleep Centre at Monash Children’s Hospital is Victoria’s only dedicated children’s sleep centre and laboratory providing consultations and sleep studies for all paediatric sleep problems. The Centre is a paediatric site for both clinical and basic research, focussing on the diagnosis, consequences and treatment of paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea and other sleep disorders in children.
Monash Sleep Network has members in the School of Psychological Sciences/Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health and the Department of Physiology/Biomedical Discovery Institute. Research underway at the Notting Hill BASE (Be Active Sleep Eat) Sleep and Circadian Medicine Laboratory (with 4 time isolation suites) is currently investigating the role of sleep in maintaining optimal health in adolescents as well as young, middle-age, and older adults; biomarkers of sleep, circadian and alertness states; circadian regulation of sleep-wakefulness, mood and cognitive performance; impact of sleep loss, poor sleep quality and circadian disruption on health, performance and safety; the interaction between sleep and mental health; pathophysiology of a variety of sleep disorders including sleep disordered breathing, insomnia and circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders (including shift work disorder), biomathematical models of sleep-wake regulation; and novel treatment approaches for sleep and circadian disorders.
The department has 4 main services (general respiratory and sleep medicine, cystic fibrosis, allergy & immunology, and lung transplantation) supported by a sleep and lung function laboratory. The sleep laboratory and sleep medicine service provides inpatient and outpatient services, with all sleep disorders managed. Current research areas include heart failure, COPD, obesity, cystic fibrosis and laboratory instrumentation.
Eastern Health Sleep Services is a NATA accredited service including a six bed state-of-the-art Sleep Laboratory at Box Hill Hospital. The Sleep Service provides a diagnostic and consultative service for the management of adults with sleep disorders, in particular sleep disordered breathing. Areas of research interest include the links between sleep and cardiovascular disease, the influence of ethnicity on OSA, models of care for acute non-invasive ventilation, the effect of drugs on sleep and the study of barriers to sleep in hospital.
The centre undertakes clinical assessment including, overnight Polysomnography (Sleep Study), discussion and evaluation of most treatment options and follow-up and assessment of response to treatment.
Peninsula Health: Frankston Sleep Centre
The Frankston Hospital Sleep Centre has been in operation for over 20 years under the direction of A/Prof David Langton. It is a 3-bed adult accredited level 1 lab, which operates 7 nights/week and performs over 900 sleep studies per year. The lab performs diagnostic and CPAP studies for the investigation and treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea. The lab also conducts MSLT and MWT tests for investigation of Narcolepsy and Idiopathic Hypersomnolence.
