Enhanced dementia diagnosis in residential aged care
Enhanced dementia diagnosis in residential aged care
The challenge
Accurate diagnosis of dementia is critical to ensure the appropriate care of those in residential aged care – however it is estimated that 1 in 5 residents in Australia have undiagnosed dementia. This project is working with patients, carers, and providers to develop and implement improved methods to screen and confirm dementia, while also addressing stigma and ageism.
Our impact
- Comprehensive resources with evidence to better support the care of people with dementia and associated. neuropsychiatric symptoms in residential aged care.
- Co-designed education on dementia stigma and ageism developed to reinforce the learning, offering ongoing support and resources for residents, families, and staff.
- Residents and their families in five Baptcare homes are now experiencing the benefits of an innovative, co-designed education program.
- Connection Cafes have been run successfully in 6 aged care homes, to ensure continuous learning.
Project leads
Led by Associate Professor Darshini Ayton (Monash University) since early 2023, the project will conclude in 2025.
