Consumer involvement and engagement opportunities

We are seeking views on a new approach to eye care for residential aged care. We want to hear from people living with dementia, carers, aged care residents, health practitioners, aged care providers and staff, and organisations or groups involved in aged care advocacy and dementia support.

This consultation will help design eye care that works better for people living with dementia in aged care homes. Your feedback, whether a quick poll, a comment, or an idea will directly shape how the pathway is delivered.

About Dr Marianne Coleman

Marianne is a clinical eyecare researcher and orthoptist. She is the Prof. Henry Brodaty Mid-Career Fellow at the National Centre for Healthy Ageing, a partnership between Monash University and Peninsula Health.

Marianne's research in dementia-friendly eyecare has been funded by the UK Royal Society of Medicine, Fight for Sight, and the Dementia Australia Research Foundation. Her work is guided at every stage by people living with dementia and their carers.

Marianne's current project is designing a dementia-friendly eye care pathway for residential aged care, building on her earlier work exploring eye test experiences in the community. Thanks to her research, people can now access dementia-friendly eyecare at over 300 optometry practices across Australia, and dementia-friendly eye test information through Dementia Australia. She has also led the development of training for optometrists on dementia-friendly eyecare, delivered in both Australia and the UK.
