A Monash University-led national group of experts including people with lived experience of dementia, clinicians and researchers in dementia care, and organisations involved in support and care of persons with dementia, are updating the 2016 Clinical Practice Guidelines and Principles of Care for people living with dementia. Impact and purpose

Dementia now causes the greatest burden of disease for Australians over 65 and is the second leading cause of burden of disease overall. As the population continues to grow and age, the number of Australians living with dementia will more than double over the next 30 years.

The previous Australian guidelines were developed in 2016 and have been an excellent resource for guiding dementia care. Since then, much research has been undertaken to improve understanding, practice and treatments, and it is therefore timely to refresh and update the 2016 guidelines. The purpose of the update is to provide recommendations and good practice statements for agreed standards in dementia risk reduction, diagnosis and therapies, and post-diagnostic care.
