Female Staff at Monash and in FMNHS
Female Staff at Monash and in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences
Monash University employs many more women than men. In 2012, Monash employed over 3000 women and 2000 men. Within the faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences there are also more female than male staff and this is true for both academic and professional classifications. The balance of women to men is not the same at all levels of seniority, however, with the proportion of women being considerably lower than it is for men at the most senior levels.
The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is proactive about helping women reach their potential. The faculty adheres to University recruitment guidelines on selection committees, supports appropriate gender representation on faculty decision-making bodies and supports equal opportunity in relation to performance development and promotion.
Leadership is an important focus for the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences: we now have our first female Dean Professor Christina Mitchell. Two of the seven Deputy Deans, the three Associate Deans and our Faculty Director are also female. The faculty has extended financial support to female staff to complete the Springboard leadership program. The faculty is represented on the Vice Chancellor's Equal Opportunity for Women Committee and has contributed to the development of the Gender Equity Strategy and the Gender Equity Toolkit.
In 2012, 44.9% of the faculty's professors were female and the proportion of women at the level of Associate Professor was 41.5%. Among professional staff at the highest levels (10 and 10+), the gender balance is 11 women and 15 men. Women in the faculty need to be encouraged at all levels to further their professional development and apply for promotion.
