Understanding Wound Care: A Professional Development Opportunity at Monash

Over 450,000 Australians are currently living with a wound. At Monash, we are dedicated to empowering health professionals and caregivers with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe and effective wound care.

The Quality and Safety in Wound Care microcredential has been collaboratively designed with experts in wound care and the aged care industry to ensure its relevance to professionals in the field and to provide the necessary skills for the health and aged care sector.

For health care professionals, aged care workers or people managing chronic wounds:

This microcredential is designed to enhance your ability to:

  • Explain the concepts of quality and safety in the context of skin and wound care management.
  • Describe the fundamental principles of skin and wound care and how they can be applied to individuals in a range of aged care settings.
  • Recognise and classify wound types in older populations.
  • Outline relevant frameworks for assessing quality and safety in skin and wound care and discuss their role in improving care for those in aged care settings.
  • Describe basic evidence-based principles of wound management and explain their application in aged care settings.
  • Explain how person-centred wound care improves healthcare in the aged care sector.

This microcredential is suited for carers of elderly people, disability carers, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers or Practitioners, ambulance officers, registered nurses, enrolled nurse, nursing support and personal care workers, nurse educator, nurse practitioner, or residential care officers.

As part of this microcredential, you will be required to complete learning content over a 12-week period. This is delivered online with interactive activities each week. Topics include:

  • Safety and quality standards in healthcare
  • Person-centred care
  • Anatomy and physiology of skin
  • Assessment of skin and skin care
  • Assessing wounds and wound types (acute & chronic)
  • Wound cleansing, management and prevention
  • Wound management
  • Factors affecting healing and when things go wrong

Completing assessments for this microcredential can assist you in progressing towards a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree at Monash University.

Monash University and the Commonwealth Department of Education are offering study grants for this microcredential, so students will not be required to pay a student contribution amount for this course in 2025.
