Ciao! Program: Using technology to improve social connectedness in residential aged care

The challenge

Loneliness and social isolation are major challenges for more than 200,000 Australians living in residential aged care. A new social inclusion initiative, the Ciao! Program – which has been successfully trialled in more than 250 residential aged care facilities in Italy, Portugal and France – aims to enrich the lives of residents through positive experiences and digitally-enabled social connection.

Our impact

  • Introduce a successful digital-enabled social inclusion model in residential aged care facilities in Australia, in partnership with the Amplifon Foundation.
  • Improve residents’ wellbeing through various positive experiences, active engagement, and social connection.
  • Trial how effectively digital-enabled technology can improve social connectedness in and across aged care facilities.

Project leads

Led by Monash University’s Professor Terry Haines and Dr Aislinn Lalor, in partnership with the Amplifon Foundation, this research project began in late 2023 and was launched in Melbourne in July 2024.
