1. METHODS-Extend: An open-label pragmatic trial to determine the efficacy and patient acceptability of methotrexate in hand osteoarthritis

We would like to invite volunteers aged 40–75 years and who suffer from pain and swelling in the joints of the hands to join our clinical trial based at the Musculoskeletal Unit, Monash University, Alfred Hospital, Commercial Road, Prahran.

The METHODS-Extend Study is a one-year open label trial investigating whether the use of methotrexate can be effective in reducing joint damage and pain in people with hand osteoarthritis and joint swelling, and who is more likely to respond to this medication.

As part of the study, participants will undergo screening and monitoring blood tests, a plain chest x-ray and two hand x-rays.

2. Understanding the needs of people with gout in order to develop programs aimed at providing better care

Many people with gout suffer from consistent problems. Recent studies have shown that there is a need for better care for gout. In order to do this, it is necessary to understand the needs of those with gout to better inform the development of new approaches to managing gout.

For this reason, we are reaching out to people in the community who have gout to better understand the impact of gout on their lives and the needs and opportunities for treatment. If you are interested in sharing your experiences with us, we've created a short survey. Your direct input will help us develop better ways to manage gout.

Please read the full explanatory statement here before deciding whether or not to take part; it details what is involved, risks and benefits of taking part, and your rights as a participant.

If you decide to participate, you can find the survey here.
