Enhancing pharmaceutical supply chain resilience to extreme weather events

Main Supervisor: Dr Stella Talic

Pilar is a Chilean dentist with experience across academic and clinical research settings in Australia. She completed her DDS in Santiago before moving to Melbourne, where she gained further experience in primary care and developed a strong interest in emergency preparedness and response. She then completed her MPH at Monash, where she acquired expertise in pharmacoepidemiology and healthcare sustainability, and has now commenced her PhD at Monash University, combining her interests in medicines use, environmental health, and primary care.

One of the aspects Pilar has most valued during her time at the Pharmacoepidemiology Research Group (PERG) is the strong support and collaboration from colleagues and supervisors, which has fostered both personal growth and professional development. Another highlight has been the opportunity to contribute to innovative, world-class research in a welcoming and collegial environment.

Pilar’s PhD focuses on developing a risk prediction model in primary care to evaluate how extreme weather events (EWEs) affect the pharmaceutical supply chain, contribute to drug shortages, and impact patient outcomes. Her thesis aims to generate practical tools to help clinicians identify vulnerable patients, while also informing healthcare policy and preparedness strategies to build resilience in the face of climate change.
