Liberation

“Shalom Aleichem Jews, you are free!”

Melbourne Buchenwald Boy, Szaja C, told how happy they were to hear the above words shouted in Yiddish by Rabbi Herschel Schacter, the American Army Chaplain as he entered Buchenwald shortly after its liberation.

Rabbi Schacter cried out these words in Yiddish, the only language that he thought that the Jews in Buchenwald would all understand.

Listen to the speech given by Rabbi Schacter describing the heart-wrenching scene upon his arrival in Buchenwald.
