Consenting
Cities

Consenting Cities endeavours to reveal gender-specific safety data to its audience through an interactive augmented reality triggered by the iconography of geometric shapes, images and icons that cover the wall of the Palazzo Mora passageway.

Operating as an extension of Monash University XYX Lab’s ongoing global engagement, Consenting Cities explores, documents, and visualises international research concerning gendered experiences of safety in our cities. Coded symbols are en-meshed in the exhibition graphic, each connected to a set of typologically categorised data points that reveal the high percentages of women and gender-diverse people who feel unsafe in public spaces. These spaces include the physical typologies of streets, bars, and public transport, as well as those we inhabit online.

The brightly coloured panels on the Palazzo Mora wall — and those repeated in this website — disguise the stark and confronting statistics that define the problematic underbelly of spatial inequality so pervasive in our cities. Reveal the data using the augmented reality experience in the exhibition or by scrolling and tapping the icons below. Collectively, these icons generate an understanding of repeating patterns of behaviour that impact the urban experiences of women and gender-diverse people globally. Consenting Cities invites you to engage with the data and a provocation: What can we do to address gendered urban inequality so acutely evidenced by the data and improve the situation for those most vulnerable?

The exhibition has also been exhibited in the No Vacancy Gallery in Melbourne as part of Melbourne Design Week and shown in the prestigious Alan Finkel Room at Monash University Clayton Chancellery building as part of Monash Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Week. This dynamic showcase of creativity and innovation extends beyond traditional viewing, with multiple co-design workshops scheduled across all three locations. Creating an immersive opportunity for visitors to engage with the art, interact with the designers, and be part of the creative process.
