About us
The Department of Forensic Medicine – a strategic partnership between Monash University and The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) – seeks to educate and inspire the next generation of forensic scientists and practitioners.
The Department of Forensic Medicine is a world leading teaching institution with state of the art facilities, offering an unparalleled opportunity to study forensic medicine and science in a fully operational forensic medical environment.
Research is a key pillar that underpins the Department of Forensic Medicine. Established in the late 1980s, the Department of Forensic Medicine has since made a major contribution to the international fields of forensic medicine, science and law with more than 1,000 publications.

To enhance teaching and research outputs in the department and strengthen the evidence basis of forensic medicine and science, and related disciplines

- To strengthen and increase the awareness and functions of the Department of Forensic Medicine nationally and internationally;
- To further develop and strengthen teaching;
- To increase the capacity to conduct and supervise research; and
- To increase research outputs with an emphasis on prevention and public health.
