Accolade for Dr Heather Morris, promoted to Level C
Congratulations to Dr Heather Morris, officially promoted to Level C – a milestone that recognises not only her academic excellence but her generosity, leadership and unique ability to connect the dots, bringing ideas together cohesively to form new ways of approaching research.
Dr Morris has made her mark across health, social care and education research, focusing on equity and implementation science to ensure the most vulnerable can receive the greatest research benefits.
Her achievements in academia began at a later stage to many – with Dr Morris taking on her Master’s degree as a mature-age student “with a toddler and a baby,” and her PhD when both daughters were in primary school.
“I was trying to find what really made me tick,” Dr Morris said. “By the time I hit the Masters, everything made sense.”
Dr Morris’ achievements include a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) to test her Social Care Theorising Model (SCTM) — one developed to narrow the research-practice gap through evidence, knowledge and the theoretical conceptualisations of practice by staff working with families.
She is known for asking the questions that determine whether a program will actually work in real-world settings.
“People don’t often think about implementation when they’re right at the start of the research process, and this needs to shift. Questions such as, ‘who is actually going to do this work? Is there funding for it?’ are important to understanding whether your research has a chance of truly helping the communities you wish it to serve.”
Dr Morris said she sees equity not as a theoretical concept, but as a daily practice – “it’s like a muscle, you need to use it every day,” she said.
Beyond her research, Dr Morris said she gains a great deal of joy and satisfaction as a mentor and collaborator, often supporting colleagues on their grants and projects by offering a different lens.
“I absolutely enjoy sharing what I’ve learned and seeing others gain from that,” she said.
“I love a good workshop and facilitating those events, I really love that exploratory idea development and learning from others.”
