Throughout 2023 and 2024, we were commissioned by the Department of Health and Aged Care’s Multicultural Health Section (the Department) to co-design and evaluate a range of health promotion activities focused on multicultural communities.
The first was to co-produce an Engagement Strategy to promote COVID-19 vaccinations by multicultural community members. Working with the Department and an Advisory Group of experts in health and multicultural affairs we collectively produced Think. Engage. Communicate. Repeat: A strategy for engaging and communicating with multicultural communities about COVID-19 in 2024 and beyond. The strategy was launched in March 2024, and implemented by 5 peak multicultural organisations across Australia, finishing on 30 June 2024. We then evaluated its implementation. Over 2.17m CALD people across Australia were reached. The percentage of people (12+ yrs) born overseas, with low English proficiency, with at least one dose of the vaccine increased from 77.2% in 2021 to 91.2% in 2022.
The second was to co-produce, as above, a ‘below the line’ campaign, which is a package of communication and engagement activities that are community-led, delivered locally and using narrowcast channels. The focus of this campaign was to promote participation by multicultural communities in screening for bowel, breast and cervical cancers. The Better information for better health: A kit for multicultural community organisations to promote cancer screening included a range of implementation supports to guide peak multicultural organisations and their partners across Australia in the promotion of screening participation. The campaign ran from mid-April to 31 October 2024 after which we evaluated its impact. Over 440,000 multicultural community members were reached by this campaign, through information/education sessions; radio, online and social media campaigns; and developed resources. The information/education sessions were particularly impactful, with around 19% attendees reporting they intended to get screened after attending a session.
