Why Lived Experience Matters in Sexual Health Research

People with lived experience are essential partners in sexual health research. Their insights help ensure research addresses real-world priorities, reflects the needs of diverse communities, and leads to outcomes that make a meaningful difference.

Sexual health is shaped by biological, social and cultural factors, including healthcare experiences, stigma, identity and access to services. While researchers contribute scientific expertise, people with lived experience bring valuable perspectives on the realities faced by individuals and communities. Together, these insights help create research that is more relevant, inclusive and impactful.

At Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (MSHC), we recognise lived experience as a valuable form of expertise. Working alongside people affected by sexual health issues helps researchers identify priorities, design studies that are more accessible and inclusive, and communicate findings in ways that are meaningful to the communities they aim to benefit.

This collaboration is particularly important in sexual health, where stigma, discrimination and barriers to care can affect participation and outcomes. Engaging people with lived experience helps ensure research is respectful, responsive and grounded in community needs. This includes working with LGBTQIA+ people, people living with HIV, sex workers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and young people.

People with lived experience can contribute at every stage of the research process, from identifying priorities and shaping study design to interpreting findings and supporting their translation into policy and practice. Their involvement helps challenge assumptions, identify unmet needs and strengthen the impact of research.

Through respectful partnerships and shared learning, MSHC is committed to embedding lived experience throughout our research to improve its quality, relevance and impact, ultimately advancing sexual health outcomes for communities in Australia and beyond.
