The protein secretory pathway

Proteins created by cells often are not used by the cell that synthesised them. These proteins go through the protein secretory pathway and are, as the name suggests, secreted out of the cell. This process and the organelles involved - the nucleus, the rough endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus and the vesicles transporting the proteins - are explained in the image below.
