STEMM Women Academic Network

Background: Value of Networking

The demand for formal networking opportunities has emerged repeatedly over the years and has been recognised by many as critical to academic success. In particular, early-mid-career researchers and postdoctoral staff in STEMM spoke about the value of having a women-only network to make connections with colleagues in other departments, having a platform to make their voices heard and a source of support.

In response to this feedback, the Athena Swan Steering Group developed an action item to establish "STEMM Women Academic Network" (SWAN) with the aim of facilitating network and mentoring opportunities within Monash University. The STEMM Women Academic Network was launched in December 2019.

Meaningful networking can facilitate long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with those in your professional circles, it can support the development of new skill sets, career planning strategies, provide access to knowledge, to gaining new insights as well as forming invaluable mentoring partnerships.
