Afifah Muminah
Driven by a passion to blend traditional wisdom with modern design, Afifah Mu'minah is an industrial designer, lecturer, and certified babywearing consultant currently pursuing her PhD with the Monash Design Health Collab. Her work focuses on creating innovative
wearable products that support and enhance parenting practices.
Afifah's professional focus is deeply rooted in her personal experience. The transition into motherhood sparked a profound appreciation for babywearing, leading her to explore its benefits for both parent and child. This insight now fuels her aspiration to support mothers of preterm infants, a significant challenge in her home country of Indonesia, which ranks fifth globally for the highest number of preterm births.
Her research seeks to bridge cultural heritage and contemporary innovation by integrating the ergonomic practices of Indonesian Kain Gendongan Batik with smart textile technologies. This interdisciplinary approach positions her work at the intersection of
industrial design, health and well-being, socio-cultural anthropology, and textile innovation.
Supported by the Beasiswa Pendidikan Indonesia (Indonesia Education Scholarship), Afifah is dedicated to advancing this field. She actively seeks collaboration with fellow researchers, babywearing communities, health professionals, and industry partners.
Through her work, she aims to benefit mothers of preterm infants and to preserve the cultural value of Kain Gendongan Batik.
