Communication Design
PhD Candidate

Department of Design

Belinda Routley is a PhD Candidate with the Monash Design Health Collab with over 20 years of professional experience as a communication designer and secondary school teacher.

Her research investigates day patient experience through design methodologies and practices to inform more meaningful and positive healthcare experiences and improve the lives of patients, staff, family and carers

Belinda aspires to make a valuable contribution to the field of healthcare design through developing human-centred interventions which utilise design thinking, methodologies and practices.

As a person living with chronic neuropathic pain, and with lived experience of regular day surgery procedures to manage ongoing symptoms, Belinda seeks to engage with and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration with fellow PhD candidates, academic staff, and health professionals.

Her favourite aspect of working across design and health is the opportunity to utilise her skills as a designer, researcher, and educator. Belinda’s research has provided the opportunity to engage with—and build relationships with—stakeholders across Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom, and these interactions continue to inform and further develop her research. Knowing that this research could have a real impact and be of benefit to other patients provides great motivation.

Belinda is a recipient of the Monash Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship which enables her to pursue her PhD study, and manage ongoing medical appointments and rehabilitation. A highlight of Belinda’s PhD journey was her receipt of the 2023 Monash Institute of Medical Engineering Women in STEMM Student Leader Award.
