Artwork by Monash designers to be featured on Melbourne’s iconic Art Trams

From early October, artwork by two Monash University designers will be featured on Melbourne's iconic Art Trams.
Monash University Associate Professor Gene Bawden, Head of Design, and Dr Nyein Chan Aung, Senior Design Research Officer at Health Collab and Lecturer in Industrial Design, will see their original designs cover two of the eight Art Trams as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival program.
The Art Trams are a revival of the Transporting Art program that originally ran between 1978 and 1993 and produced 36 hand-painted tram designs.
The Art Tram designs
Both designers have created vibrant original designs that respond to this year’s theme of ‘welcoming and borderless city’.
These wonderful art trams show off and celebrate some of our most brilliant local artists to the many people who travel through our city every day. Congratulations to those chosen and I hope their work leaves a lasting impression for everyone who sees it.
Martin Foley, Victoria Minister for Creative Industries

Yours, Mine, Ours
Associate Professor Bawden’s graphic design Yours, Mine, Ours celebrates the ambitions for diversity and inclusion within the city of Melbourne. Abstractly represented in the stripes of colour, pattern and geometric blocks, are letters that spell out this proclamation.

The Last Supper
Dr Aung’s artwork features an interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Instead of Jesus Christ with his apostles, the illustration features unknown customers enjoying dinner at Melbourne’s renowned Supper Inn Chinese restaurant, capturing the diversity, community and culture of Melbourne.
The first tram will hit the tracks on October 8. The Art Trams will remain on Melbourne’s tram network until August 2020.
