Aziz Sohail announced as 2024 curator-in-residence at MADA Gallery

Aziz Sohail is a Pakistani-born curator and writer. Their research and resultant projects honour and recognise the power of queer and feminist collectivity, sociability, joy and wayward encounter.
Aziz Sohail (they/them) has been awarded this year’s curator-in-residence at MADA Gallery.
Aziz Sohail is a Pakistani-born art curator, writer and PhD candidate in curatorial practice at Monash Art, Design and Architecture. Their research and resultant projects honour and recognise the power of queer and feminist collectivity, sociability, joy and wayward encounter. As part of their residency, they will produce an evolutive exhibition with multiple parts, titled To Forever Ebb and Flow: Queer Time/Migrant Time.
Sohail says “reflecting on the late Ranajit Guha’s meditation on the migrant condition as not just about belonging/disbelonging but also ‘temporal maladjustment’, along with Jack Halberstam's ‘alternative temporalities’, which situates queer time as outside of the heteronormative ‘markers of life experience namely birth, marriage, reproduction and death’, To Forever Ebb and Flow: Queer Time/Migrant Time will explore the propositions of migrant time and queer time and bring them in conversation with each other.”
The project will include film screenings, conversations, readings, radio and performance and bring together artists based within Australia as well as internationally. Expanding beyond MADA Gallery, To Forever Ebb and Flow: Queer Time/Migrant Time will also include collaborations with West Space, through their micro-project West Space Window, and Liquid Architecture for a three-part podcast series and an activation event.
The MADA Gallery curator-in-residence is a year-long program that provides established and emerging curators the opportunity to deliver an exhibition program at MADA Gallery, a contemporary art space located on Monash University's Caulfield Campus. Along with examination exhibitions by PhD candidates, MADA Gallery hosts a programme of exhibitions by artists, curators, designers, architects, and other creative practitioners throughout the year.
