Monash Art, Design Architecture at Melbourne Design Week 2024
Monash Art, Design and Architecture is putting on a host of programs, workshops and exhibitions as part of Melbourne Design Week 2024, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.
Here’s some highlights:
Architecture and urbanism

Monash Urban Lab’s Ground Melbourne will be on display on the third floor of NGV Australia. This project represented Melbourne at the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in 2023. Continuing a dialogue around the themes begun in Seoul, the projects will be ‘performed’ in the space during Melbourne Design Week with guest Korean architect, Yerin Kang.
Join leading creative practitioners at Caulfield campus at the Participation in Action talk which will showcase four recent projects developed in collaboration with diverse communities across Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand). Speakers include Professor Mel Dodd (Interim Dean, Monash Art, Design and Architecture), Nikhila Madabhushi (Equity Office), Dr Kathy Waghorn (Hoopla) and Heather MacRae (Fulcrum Agency).
Design and healthcare

Health by Design: The future of healthcare. Image: Mobile Stroke Scanner in Context
Come along to Monash College to view the Health by Design: The future of healthcare exhibition, curated by Ian Wong and showcasing some of the incredible work coming out of the Design Health Collab, including a mobile stroke imager, designed to fit into standard ambulances and a wearable light sensor that monitors light exposure.
As part of this exhibition there will be a public lecture by international speaker Richard Goossens, Professor of Physical Ergonomics at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, who will speak about his experience in designing for complex challenges in healthcare.
For prospective students

Ever wondered what our Bachelor of Design students get up to? Check out Transhuman: Crafting Futures with Nature's Wisdom at the Victorian Pride Centre in St Kilda. This exhibition culminates the imaginative efforts of first-year students whoe embark on redefining the human body's capabilities, guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For high-schoolers, join us for a hands-on workshop in our Department of Design to build a Lumogram; a touch-sensitive pendant that lights up a miniature scene made from illustrated cutouts. This workshop is ideal for those in years 10 to 12, or anyone keen to pursue a design education.
