Workforce development

The Monash Regional Training Hubs in Gippsland and North West Victoria optimise the opportunities for medical students and junior doctors to live, work and train rurally. In 2023, our Hubs delivered a strong suite of professional development and supported initiatives for aspiring rural doctors and rural doctors in training.

Our Hubs continue to work closely with rural health services, medical colleges and local stakeholders to advocate for more rurally-based training opportunities to help attract and retain doctors in our communities.

Rural Training Pathways Congress shows students their rural health futures

The full day Rural Training Pathways Congress was hosted by the Gippsland Rural Training Hub in Traralgon, and used the theme of “rural health futures” to show how specialty training can be strengthened in rural areas.

DRIVERS 2023 lets young doctors take the stage on rural healthcare

During the DRIVERS conference, over sixty presentations were made by over 130 junior doctors and medical students, on a variety of health research subjects.

Gippsland doctors receive career-enriching bursary

Fifteen Gippsland doctors have received additional funding for their professional education, in the form of the Rural Resume Boost Bursary Program.

Reconciliation forum champions cultural safety in healthcare

The North West Victorian Training Hub hosted a large forum with over 50 doctors, members from the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association, and the Dja Dja Wurrung traditional owners, with the aim of educating doctors on cultural awareness.
