Leading rural health research is a core strategy outlined in the Monash Rural Health Strategic Plan 2023–2027, and we remain committed to delivering high-quality research that addresses critical issues affecting rural communities. In 2024, we advanced research in key areas including cardiovascular disease and mental health, while continuing to drive progress in the Hazelwood Health Study.

Exploring the health literacy gap between rural and metropolitan cardiovascular patients

Kaveesha Jayasuriya’s honours research revealed lower health literacy among rural cardiac patients. Presented at NRHC 2024, his findings highlighted the need to better support rural Australians in navigating care and engaging with health providers.

Evaluating the mental health system

Dr Anton Isaacs’ research revealed major gaps in Australia’s mental health system, with carers and users calling for holistic, person-centred care. Findings highlighted urgent need for reform beyond clinical approaches.
