International Conference on Mindfulness (ICM) Asia Pacific 2022
Southern Synergy is part of the team involved in hosting the next International Conference on Mindfulness (ICM) Asia Pacific in 2022 in Melbourne, which has been postponed from 2021 due to COVID-19.
By way of background, the very first ICM conference was held in Rome in 2013 and since 2016 has been running biennially in Europe. The 2020 conference was due to be held in Denmark in July 2020 but is now taking place in July 2021. The inaugural ICM Asia Pacific conference, the first “local” version of this conference, was held in Auckland, New Zealand in February 2019.
At this stage, we are looking to hold the ICM Asia Pacific 2022 conference over 5 days in November 2022, with specific dates to be finalised. Michael Leunig was the Rapporteur at the 2013 Australian Mindfulness Science and Practice Conference, also held in Melbourne, and he has agreed to contribute a similar role at ICM 2022.
In terms of the vision for the conference, themes we have been discussing include: furthering the understanding and practice of mindfulness in contemporary times; bringing together traditional discipline silos; engaging diverse perspectives and working with controversy; and considering global challenges. At this stage, we have come up with four strands: 1. Social and political; 2. Intrapersonal and individual; 3. Spiritual and cultural; 4. Challenge and re-conceptualisation.
We are currently in the process of organising a new website ICMMelbourne2022.org and considering keynote speakers and venues. We will be moving forward to appoint subgroups in 2021, including a program committee, and may look to expand the organising team.
