Biography

Dr. Niamh Cummins is an Associate Professor in Public Health at the School of Medicine in the University of Limerick (UL) in Ireland. Her research interest is health services improvement with a focus on pre-hospital and emergency medicine. Niamh is particularly interested in research on the integration of health services, mental health and clinical screening tools. She has led national policy changes including the introduction of new models of care (e.g. Emergency Aeromedical Service) and updates in clinical practice guidelines (e.g. Spinal Injury Management) for Irish paramedics.

Niamh’s speciality is in collaboratively fostering a research culture and building research capacity through networking, mentorship and peer-assisted learning. She is the Founder and Chair of the Irish Paramedicine Education and Research Network (IPERN), a multidisciplinary team of paramedics, nurses, doctors, scientists and allied health professionals dedicated to building research capacity for paramedicine in Ireland and internationally.

Niamh was involved in establishing the foundation degree programme in Ireland for paramedics with the first students graduating from UL in 2016. She is a member of the College of Paramedics Public Health Special Interest Group, the International Advisory Board for the PRIME Centre in Wales and she is an Associate Editor for the journal Paramedicine.
