Graduate Certificate of Urgent and Primary Care

The course supports students to build confidence and capability in managing a wider range of patient presentations, working across interdisciplinary teams and contributing to evolving models of care.

The Graduate Certificate is a 24-credit point postgraduate qualification completed part-time. It comprises two 12-credit point units focused on extended care practice, clinical reasoning, person-centred care, interprofessional practice and contemporary models of urgent, primary and community-based healthcare.

For paramedics, successful completion of this course may also provide a pathway to further advanced practice study, including the Master of Paramedic Practitioner, subject to meeting the relevant entry requirements.

The course is designed for paramedics and registered nurses seeking to develop their capability in urgent, primary and community-based care. It is suitable for clinicians already working in these areas as well as those seeking to move into extended practice roles as well as those wishing to further develop their knowledge and understanding.
No. The course is designed both for clinicians currently working in urgent, primary or community-based care and those seeking to develop the capabilities required to move into these settings.
The course develops practical capability in clinical assessment and reasoning, diagnostic decision-making, management of common urgent and primary care presentations, minor illness and injury, chronic disease, person-centred care, referral and escalation, and interprofessional practice.
The curriculum has been mapped against national Urgent Care Clinic (UCC) standards to address capabilities relevant to contemporary urgent care practice. This includes assessment and clinical reasoning, referral and escalation, diagnostics, management of common urgent care presentations and a range of minor injury and illness presentations.
No. The Graduate Certificate does not include a formal clinical placement or a requirement to arrange supervised clinical practice. Applied clinical learning is incorporated into the coursework and assessment activities.
Yes. The course is designed to support clinicians from across Australia through flexible, multimodal learning, including students working in regional, rural and remote areas.
The Graduate Certificate develops knowledge and clinical capability but does not independently change a clinician's registered or employer-authorised scope of practice. How these capabilities are used in practice will depend on professional, regulatory, credentialing and employer requirements.
The Graduate Certificate provides a postgraduate academic qualification but does not automatically confer a particular employment title, clinical credential or employer-authorised scope of practice. Appointment and credentialing requirements are determined by the relevant employer, health service and professional or regulatory frameworks.
Yes. The Graduate Certificate can be completed as a standalone qualification. For eligible paramedics, it may also provide relevant postgraduate preparation for further advanced practice study, including the Master of Paramedic Practitioner, subject to meeting the relevant entry requirements.
