Transition and Wellbeing Research Programme

This collaborative study with the University of Adelaide was funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. The Transition and Wellbeing Research Programme aimed to provide a comprehensive picture of the mental health and wellbeing of serving and ex-serving Australian Defence Force personnel (including reservists), and their families, the trajectory of disorder and pathways to care for individuals previously diagnosed with a mental health disorder, and the impact of combat.

Researchers at MonCOEH and Monash University took lead roles in the Physical Health Status report and Impact of Combat Study. These reports are available on the Department of Veteran Affairs website:

Australian peacekeepers health study (2014)

This collaborative study undertaken by the Australian Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health investigated the health of Australian veterans of deployments on United Nations sanctioned peacekeeping missions to Rwanda, Somalia, Cambodia, Namibia, Western Sahara and East Timor over the period 1989-2002.

The study examined the long-term effect of peacekeeping on the mental and physical health status, health service use and quality of life of veterans who had transitioned out of full-time service.
