GP24 with Academic Registrar Dr Jordan Crawford

GP24 Jordan Crawford

Academic Registrar, Jordan Crawford, shares her experiences at RACGP's GP24 conference.

As one of the Academic Registrars participating in the RACGP Academic Post this year, I was
fortunate to be able to attend the RACGP GP24 Conference, held at the Perth Convention and
Exhibition Centre on Whadjuk Noongar Country, over 21-23 November.

It was a large event with attendees from across the country, including over 1,000 General
Practitioners and many other staff, students, exhibitors and more. The program was diverse, and I
attended a number of informative and engaging sessions. Topics at some of the sessions I attended
included artificial intelligence in medicine, medical education, vaping reform and preventive
healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. With such breadth in general practice it
was beneficial to have dedicated time to learn from experts in their fields about important
developments and new guidelines, and to reflect on how I can apply this knowledge to benefit my
patients.

As an Academic Registrar I found the opportunities to network with other primary care academics
invaluable, including through formal events such as the Research Breakfast, as well as informal
opportunities during the meal breaks. It was inspiring to be around so many like-minded individuals
with a passion for research in general practice.

I also had the chance to present the research study I have been working on with Dr Atish Manek and
supervised by Professor Grant Russell whilst undertaking my Academic Post within the Department
of General Practice at Monash University. I presented a poster presentation titled “How do
Australian GPs experience end-of-life care delivery in residential aged care?”. I was honoured to
receive the Rhee Family Award for Research in Aged Care at GP24 for this work, and look forward to
finishing off the project as I come to the end of my Academic Post.

Conferences are an important time to connect with colleagues and GP24 was no different. It was
excellent to be able to meet up with many of my fellow Academic Registrars as well as other
colleagues across general practice. It was particularly exciting to watch many of the 2024 Academic
Registrars present their research across a range of disciplines. I look forward to seeing where they
will take their important work in years to come.
