Collaborations
Planetary Health Division
Alongside Professor Jane Fisher AO, Professor Karin Leder co-leads the Monash University Planetary Health Division.
Planetary Health is emerging as a new discipline to understand and respond to intersecting crises affecting the globe. It is conceptualised as addressing the health of humanity in the context of dynamic social and environmental systems. By combining insights from many disciplines, planetary health promotes an ‘eco-social’ understanding of health and emphasises the importance of diverse perspectives in creating solutions to problems affecting global public health.
The Planetary Health Division houses our environmental and occupational health researchers, infectious disease epidemiologists and many of our global health researchers. They combine strong quantitative research experience and qualitative methods to capture the complete experience of health and healthcare across a number of community and workplace settings both nationally and internationally.
Australian Living Evidence Collaboration
The Australian Living Evidence Collaboration (ALEC) supports the development of ‘living’ clinical evidence and guidelines, enabling almost real time updating of the latest research and guidance without compromising the rigorous, gold standard methods needed to provide trustworthy recommendations.
Recognising the urgent need for synthesised evidence on pressing climate and health issues, researchers at the Infectious Diseases Epidemiology Unit have secured funding to establish priority evidence in this area. This investment will strengthen ongoing partnerships with ALEC, supporting the development of climate-focused evidence reviews to inform critical healthcare decision-making.
Health and Climate Initiative
Professor Karin Leder leads Monash University’s Health and Climate Initiative, spearheading the University's commitment to addressing the health impacts of climate change.
With collaborations extending across Monash’s international campuses in Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia, the Health and Climate Initiative is bringing together the collective knowledge of health and climate experts from across Australia and the Indo-Pacific region to:
- Expand research on the health impacts of climate, especially in climate-vulnerable communities
- Generate evidence-based climate adaptation solutions
- Translate research into policy and practice
Read about the exciting launch of the inaugural Health and Climate Strategy (2025-2030) – which charts a bold new pathway for collaborative, evidence-based health and climate research that directly strengthens community well-being and resilience in the face of a changing climate.
The Initiative actively seeks partnerships with research institutions, healthcare providers, governments, industry, the community and other stakeholders to explore the impact of climate change on health and develop advancements and solutions that build resilience for a healthier and more sustainable future.
