Statin Treatment for COVID-19 to optimise Neurological Recovery (STRONGER)
MRFF GRANT
Statins, commonly used to manage cholesterol, may also affect cell proteins involved in infection and inflammation. COVID-19 can lead to severe inflammation and long-term neurological issues, including memory and cognitive problems.
The STRONGER trial investigates whether atorvastatin, a widely prescribed statin, can reduce inflammation and improve memory and cognitive function in individuals with persistent neurological symptoms following COVID-19.
This international randomized clinical trial compares atorvastatin to standard care in adults experiencing symptoms such as brain fog, headaches, and poor sleep after COVID-19. Conducted in Australia and Chile, the study employs various assessments and advanced brain imaging to evaluate memory, thinking, and signs of brain inflammation.
If successful, atorvastatin could mitigate long-term neurological effects of COVID-19, offering a low-cost, well-established treatment to improve brain function in affected individuals.
