The Alfred Hospital and Monash University Department of Respiratory Medicine is a leading clinical-academic department committed to basic and clinical research that fosters innovation and creativity, while aiming for seamless integration of discovery research with clinical research and clinical practice. Our mission is to reduce the burden of respiratory conditions through innovative, patient-oriented research.

Structure and application

The Alfred Hospital and Monash University Department of Respiratory Medicine PhD Program comprises four elements:

  • Preparation support
  • Research support
  • Funding support
  • Clinical appointment

Research funding

At the discretion of the research supervisor or Director of Respiratory Medicine, PhD candidates may be offered up to $1,000 per year for 3 years ($3,000 in total) to be used for research support such as project costs, ongoing education costs and travel costs. Candidates may also apply for travel grants through Monash University to attend conferences.
