Remote rehab trial transforms respiratory disease treatment

Physiotherapists A/Prof Narelle Cox and Prof Anne Holland  have been recognised for their work in transforming treatment for patients with chronic asthma, emphysema and bronchitis. Their REACH trial overcame geographic barriers, supporting people at home. It's now making its way into global treatment guidelines and clinical practice, and is one of the NHMRC '10 of the Best' projects for 2025.

Research overview

Our research is centred on improving access to high-quality respiratory care for people living with lung disease. We begin by identifying the needs of patients and their families, with a focus on addressing barriers to care and reducing inequities in access. Building on this foundation, we develop and evaluate innovative non-drug treatments, test their effectiveness in clinical trials, and embed successful approaches into routine clinical practice. A key focus of our work is expanding access to pulmonary rehabilitation through flexible, patient-centred models such as home-based programs and telerehabilitation, ensuring care is accessible across ages, geographic locations, and times of increased need. Our research builds the evidence underpinning a wide range of non-drug treatments for chronic lung disease including oxygen therapy and self-management. We have strong links to the Department of Physiotherapy and Department of Respiratory Medicine at Alfred Health, enabling us to integrate research directly into clinical care, accelerating the translation of evidence into accessible, real-world respiratory services.

Our team has produced two, freely available, web-based resources to support clinicians to deliver new models of pulmonary rehabilitation. Check them out here:
