Undergraduate medical teaching overview

The Department of Surgery at the Alfred Hospital has a major role in the teaching of surgery in all years of the Central Clinical School's Undergraduate Medical Education program. In particular, the members of the Department of Surgery have a significant commitment in clinical teaching for Year 3B and 5D MBBS students.

Year 5D medical students have a six week block of surgical teaching which is coordinated through the Department of Surgery. This is conducted in association with a number of clinical departments within the Alfred Hospital, in particular, the Departments of Radiology, Intensive Care and Anaesthetics at the Alfred. There is also a substantial contribution by the William Buckland Radiation Oncology Service and the Alfred Hospital Trauma Service.

Seminars, forums and workshops

Surgery research and teaching staff hold a number of ad hoc seminars and workshops to enable skills development for both students and practitioners. With an increasingly crowded curriculum these extra-curricular activities play an important role in medical education.
