Research overview

Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that performs minimally invasive and endovascular surgery. They deploy imaging techniques such as CT, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy instead of making large incisions. They are able to perform procedures inside blood vessels, within bile ducts, and directly into some organs, using imaging for perfect precision. These operations are the next iteration of traditional surgery, reducing invasiveness further from keyhole into now pinhole procedures. They offer cost-effective alternatives to traditional open surgery, whilst usually having shorter recovery times.

The Interventional Radiology group within Monash Department of Surgery perform a wide range of research, including:

  • Prospective first-in-human device trials
  • Prospective randomised controlled trials and cohort studies as a multisite investigator
  • Prospective, investigator-initiated randomised controlled trials and cohort studies
  • Retrospective cohort and case-controlled studies
  • Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
  • Development of clinical practice guidelines

These research projects cover a wide range of different medical conditions, however the focus of these are:

  • Novel endovascular treatments for peripheral arterial disease such as stents and drug coated angioplasty technology
  • Arterial and venous angioplasty
  • Embolisation, including hypervascular tumours and arrest of haemorrhage after trauma
  • Novel embolic agents
  • Thermal ablation of benign and malignant tumours
  • Cancer treatments
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Costing analyses
  • Registry management
