With the excitement and organised chaos of Orientation Week now over for another year, Monash campuses are brimming with expectation, hosting new and returning students as well as the broader University community. The Australian education sector is highly regarded globally and Monash a very attractive  destination  for international students, who make an invaluable contribution to the diversity of campus life. As the University matures, many of these new students are themselves the children of Monash alumni, whom we warmly welcome.

The recent arrival of Mr Ken Sloan at Monash as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President Enterprise signals another bold ambition of Focus Monash to enhance our record for commercialisation, collaboration and student entrepreneurship. I encourage you to contact our Enterprise and partnerships staff to share your ambitions with Monash and to help us advance the joint education and research  initiatives  we are exploring with industry partners.

The start of the semester is a timely reminder that, as an institution founded for public benefit, Monash delivers a wonderful array of education and other services to the community throughout the year by means of sporting and arts events, public spaces and research infrastructure. Our libraries continue  their  transformation in meeting the needs of a new generation of scholars and I invite you to view development of these transformational learning spaces online.

We also welcome your visit to a Monash campus any time by connecting with the Alumni Engagement team. Please also take the opportunity to join us at an upcoming Monash event whether it be a webinar, community seminar or faculty celebration.

As I prepare to step into the role as Chair of Universities Australia, I look forward to the unprecedented opportunities emerging for Australian universities to showcase international leadership  in  education, innovation and research. Monash leads the sector in many areas and makes contributions well beyond the lecture theatre and classroom, as showcased in our 2016 statement, Shared Ambitions. Global Connections. Big Outcomes.

Wherever 2017 takes you, I wish you ongoing success throughout the year as each of us persist in our endeavours to be international, enterprising, inclusive and truly exceptional.

Regards,

Professor Margaret Gardner AO
President and Vice-Chancellor
