Antisemitism in the cultural and creative industries

This inaugural MIRRA research project examines how antisemitism is affecting Australia’s cultural and creative industries (CCIs). Based on interviews and workshops with artists, leaders and philanthropists, it reveals that many Jewish stakeholders now feel excluded, unsafe and professionally at risk. While recent global events have intensified these experiences, the findings also point to deeper structural issues across the sector. The resulting report, released in 2025,  includes recommendations for the industry to move forward, across both policy review for long-term cultural shifts, and short-term practical solutions to address cultural safety concerns.

Antisemitism in Australian universities

This research project examines the rising levels of antisemitism across Australian universities. It documents the experiences of Jewish students and staff who report increasing harassment, marginalisation and hostility, and is grounded in peer reviewed research, evidence delivered to parliamentary inquiries, and consultation with university leaders and community organisations. The resulting framework, released in 2025, sets out a  practical, evidence-based roadmap for universities to address antisemitism and strengthen inclusion across the higher education sector. This includes clear and implementable guidance on preventing and responding  to antisemitism, protecting academic freedom, and strengthening the capacity of university leaders and staff to deal with racism, polarisation and harm.

This project also includes practical intervention strategies, such as antisemitism and cultural awareness training programs that have so far been rolled out to over 1100 executives and frontline staff at Group of Eight and other universities around Australia, as well as some overseas institutions.

Holocaust education and antisemitism

This project investigates how Holocaust education in Australia is responding to the resurgence of antisemitism following 7 October 2023, with a focus on its perceived effectiveness, evolving approaches and the challenges of connecting historical memory with contemporary relevance.

Boycotts of Jewish-owned businesses

This research project looks into the contemporary phenomenon of boycotts targeting Jewish-owned businesses in Australia following 7 October 2023, situating these developments within both historical and legal frameworks. Focusing on local experiences – including instances of direct confrontation, disruption and calls for economic exclusion – the study investigates how such boycotts operate not merely as economic actions, but as mechanisms of social ostracism and potentially as expressions of antisemitism. Through interdisciplinary analysis encompassing historical, social and legal perspectives, it seeks to understand the impact of these boycotts on Jewish individuals and communities, and to clarify the boundaries between political expression and unlawful discrimination in the contemporary Australian context.

Antisemitism in sports

This research project explores the diverse experiences of Jewish Australians in sport, across all levels, from grassroots participation to elite competition. It seeks to understand how Jewish identity, culture, and community engagement shape sporting experiences for players, coaches, administrators, board members, and fans, drawing on the lived experiences . The study considers both positive and challenging aspects of participation, including inclusion, representation, and cultural safety.

Antisemitism and the law

This research project examines the intersection of antisemitism and Australian law, assessing how well current legal frameworks – relating to and extending beyond vilification, hate speech and discrimination laws – have addressed antisemitic incidents. The project is working to identify the legal changes needed to better protect Jewish communities, and strengthen Australia's ability to prevent and respond to antisemitism. It is being conducted in collaboration with the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, as well as legal scholars and professionals working in the field.
