Holocaust memoirs

Introduction

The Holocaust memoirs project is based on a growing database that, as of 2023, comprised 472 first-hand accounts written by Australia-based residents and/or published in Australia. This remains an ongoing project, with new entries being added as they are completed. The authors are a diverse group, varying in age, nationality, and religious background.

The database

The database includes memoirs authored by both Jewish survivors and non-Jewish witnesses. The writers endured a range of experiences during 1933-1945 and have primarily recounted their own experiences. Accounts categorised as “Jewish survivors” are those written by Jews who lived through the Holocaust, whereas the category of “witnesses” encompasses those who observed the Holocaust but were not its primary victims. This group includes Righteous Gentiles who provided assistance to Jews, members of underground resistance movements, and soldiers who participated in the liberation of concentration camps.

Not all survivors lived within the Nazi sphere of influence or directly endured Nazi brutality, yet they lived in constant fear as Jews and thus their memoirs are included in the database. Some suffered antisemitic persecution in Nazi Germany, leading them to flee before the onset of the Second World War or during its early stages, seeking refuge in various regions of Europe, Asia and Australia. Many refugees from the eastern-occupied territories sought safety in the Soviet Union but encountered antisemitic discrimination, with some being interned in Soviet labour camps. In Hungary, prior to the Nazi occupation in 1944, Jews were subject to persecution under the fascist government, with many conscripted into forced labour battalions.

Among the majority who directly endured Nazi persecution, some survived by going into hiding, others endured the horrors of the ghettoes, ruthless liquidation policies in the east, and the concentration camps. The category of survivors encompasses a wide spectrum of experiences, ranging from those hidden ‘in the open’ under false identity papers to those who survived extermination camps. Many of those in hiding were children or adolescents who survived through the assistance of non-Jewish caregivers, such as in Catholic orphanages, or with members of the resistance or forest partisans. A number of survivors participated in organised resistance with the underground or partisan movements, both Jewish and non-Jewish. Some survivors enlisted in allied forces in Europe after fleeing Nazi-occupied territories or following liberation during the war’s final stages.

Authors

While all the memoirs in the database provide first-hand accounts, they vary in content, style and genre. Some were written by accomplished authors, while others by those who would not have chosen to write at all were it not for a compelling sense of duty to tell their stories. Most of these memoirs were written and published many decades after the events they recount. A few entries consist of diaries written during the war and published years later.

While the majority of entries take the narrative form of memoir or autobiography, others adopt a more literary or essayist style, including poetry, and a few are speeches. Many were written with the assistance of family, friends, writing programs (as discussed below), and in some cases, involved collaboration with professional authors, historians, or editors, resulting in a blend of memoir and biography. Some survivors engaged in substantial historical research, resulting in memoirs that are partly academic, although they remain first-hand accounts. Additionally, the database includes several edited collections and anthologies of first-hand accounts, produced by university researchers and Jewish institutions. To enhance accessibility, the database is broadly categorised based on genre and the experience group of the author.

Accounts range in length and detail; those featured in anthologies or edited collections are often very brief (spanning just a few pages) and provide only a short overview or glimpse into the survivor’s Holocaust experiences. In contrast, some memoirs extend to several hundred pages and recount experiences in great detail.

The extent to which authors discuss their pre-war and post-war lives also varies significantly. While some provide detail in great depth, others provide only brief glimpses or have not discussed these aspects at all. Some accounts focus primarily on the aftermath of the Holocaust, a few are multi-volume, recounting the author’s life from childhood to old age. Most are single-authored, but some memoirs are co-authored, presenting the experiences of married couples or families.

Currently, the database includes only testimonies in English, although some were written or first published in a language other than English. At a later time, it is hoped to include non-English as well as second and third-generation accounts.

Publication

The majority of memoirs in the database were either published by small Australian publishing houses, self-published by the authors themselves, or produced by various institutions and museums across Australia. Melbourne was the primary location for the publications, accounting for 302, while 126 were published in Sydney and 15 overseas. Given that most of the memoirs are not commercial publications, they have not undergone the rigorous editorial and proofreading process associated with mainstream publishing. Those published in Melbourne and Sydney are largely the result of the efforts of the Makor Jewish Community Library (now the Lamm Jewish Library), the Sydney Jewish Museum, and the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.  Below, these programs are briefly described.

In 1998, the Makor Jewish Community Library in Melbourne initiated the “Write Your Story Program” under the dedicated guidance of program coordinator Julie Meadows OAM, who spent more than twenty-years gathering, editing and facilitating the publication of memoirs. In 2000, Adele Hulse joined as facilitator of the program’s weekly writing sessions and later became coordinator. The project received a grant from the Victorian Multicultural Commission, to support the well-being of migrants over the age of fifty. Although not limited to Holocaust survivors, the program became an outlet through which many survivors could record and publish their stories. As of June 2023, the Library has published 144 memoirs authored by Jewish Australians, which include 102 Holocaust memoirs and eight anthologies. Additionally, 114 books have been written and published as part of the Sydney Jewish Museum’s Community Stories Department (formerly known as the Community Stories Project), led by Jacqui Wasilewsky. This project also began as a writing course in 2002. 89 of these publications are Holocaust memoirs with 64 written by first-generation survivors. Further publications are forthcoming. The Melbourne Holocaust Museum has also published fourteen memoirs authored by their survivor guides and volunteers, and holds dozens of donated, unpublished manuscripts by Australian survivors which can be viewed in their library.

Analysis

As of July 2023, the memoir project has identified 472 publications, which were published between 1945 and 2023, for possible inclusion in the database. Currently, the project has completed summaries of more than 270.  These memoirs are tabulated by place and date of publication, survivor experience, country of origin, and residence at the time of publication. The following section presents the results of this analysis. First, the publication date of the 472 accounts is summarised in Table 1.

The following section presents the findings derived from the analysis of185 completed summaries. These include memoirs authored by individuals or in collaboration with others, as well as anthologies with contributions from multiple authors, comprising the accounts of 276 survivors and witnesses. As with the place of publication, the overwhelming majority – 207 out of 276 – are residents in Melbourne, with 32 residing in Sydney and 28 in Perth. A substantial number were also children or adolescents at the time of their experiences – 131 were born between 1927 and 1935.

Survivors endured a diverse range of experiences, broadly classified in five categories: ghetto life, internment in concentration camps, living in hiding, seeking refuge, and participating in resistance, including enlistment in armed forces. These experiences are also cross-referenced with the survivor’s country of origin. The country of origin was determined based on the national borders at the time of the survivor’s birth, not current boundaries which may have changed.

It should be noted that Tables 3, 4a and 4b present the number of survivor experiences per category. However, the total number of these experiences does not correspond to the total number of survivors (276) nor the total number of accounts (472) as outlined in Tables 1 and 2. This is because individual survivors often endure multiple experiences, and/or provide multiple accounts.

Development and organisation

The database contains detailed information for each publication. Each entry comprises a content summary, including a list of important geographical locations discussed within the work. In addition to bibliographical details (author’s name, publication title, publisher, place and year of publication, where known), the database lists the source’s location when it is held by a library. At least one location is indicated for each entry in the database. A full list of library holdings can be accessed using the Trove resource (under Books and Libraries) on the National Library of Australia website.

The Makor Community Library was the publisher of memoirs produced by the “Write Your Story Program” until 2016, when the library was renamed the Lamm Jewish Library of Australia (LJLA) and assumed responsibility for ongoing publication. In 2022, the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Melbourne was renamed the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.

The concept for this project was developed in 1993 by Professor Andrew Markus, with initial preparation of summaries by Daniel Bloom, Adrian Sackson and Dr Margaret Taft, and with assistance by students enrolled in the subject 'The Holocaust' at Monash University. Approximately 100 summaries were initially prepared. In the second phase of the project, in 2019-2026, a database of publications was compiled by Sue Hampel and Courtney Baker.  Additional summaries are being added in the second phase and the original summaries re-checked.  Most of the second phase summaries were prepared Courtney Baker, with additional summaries prepared by Sue Hampel, and with editorial oversight by Andrew Markus.
