Antisemitism and Cultural Awareness Training

About the project
In response to rising antisemitism at Australian universities, ACJC has developed an evidence-based training program that equips university staff to recognise, understand and respond to antisemitism in higher education contexts. This program is a key part of the Monash Initiative for Rapid Research into Antisemitism (MIRRA), which aims to understand and address antisemitism across the major sectors of Australian public life.
Based on research into best practices and the experiences of Jewish staff and students, this training is practical, trauma-informed and empathy-led. Sessions use case studies, testimonies and policy-aligned tools to support decision-making and responses to discrimination and exclusion across campuses.
This program has been extensively tested in practice. Since 2024, the MIRRA team has conducted training sessions with over 1100 university executives and frontline staff at all Group of Eight (Go8) universities, as well as other Australian and overseas universities.
The training is currently being expanded to include train-the-trainer workshops to meet high demand across universities nationwide, including collaboration with other key organisations such as Australia's Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism (ASECA) and Universities Australia. MIRRA is also working on expanding this program to provide sector-specific training for other types of organisations and communities.
Sessions can be adapted to the needs of different audiences, from executives and leaders to academic and administrative staff. Training duration is also flexible. Components include:
- Jewish knowledge – history, community, culture and religion
- Antisemitism – definitions, history and background
- Key topics and concepts – Israel, Zionism, Judaism and others
- Practical tools for addressing antisemitism and incident response
- Case studies and practical exercises
- Question time and open discussion
- Applying antisemitism training principles to broader cultural competency, and combatting all forms of racism and discrimination
