About us
The Centre for Health Economics is the leading group of economists researching health, health care and health policy in Australia. With around 30 academic staff and 20 PhD students, we conduct research on the economics of health and wellbeing that is cutting edge, impactful, and global in nature. We work with our partners to develop answers to the most important and difficult questions to improve the health and wellbeing of local and global communities.
World-class research
Supported by external funding from the NHMRC and ARC as well as through international funding agencies such as the Wellcome Trust, national and state governments, and other competitive grants and contracts, the Centre for Health Economics has had a number of major accomplishments, including:
- World class research on the economic and social determinants of health and wellbeing, including mental health and for vulnerable disadvantaged populations.
- Significant impact on health and wellbeing through the application of economic decision-making frameworks to the listing of pharmaceuticals on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and the economic evaluation of a range of clinical treatments, diagnostics and new technologies.
- Developing methodologies for the measurement of wellbeing and health inequalities.
- Providing much-needed evidence to influence the design of funding models and health care markets.
