Math prerequisite
If you are enrolled in a degree or non-award programs at Monash University, the Faculty of Business and Economics offers a range of units on an elective basis. For some units, we assume that you possess a level of competency across a range of mathematical concepts prior to enrolment.
The handbook entry for these units will specify the level of maths required for this purpose. You should review the information below to self-assess your maths background.
- VCE Year 11 level – is completion of units/courses equivalent to General Mathematics Units 1 and 2 in the Victorian Certificate of Education. You may have covered topics such as: Algebra; Computation and financial arithmetic; Graphs of linear and non-linear relations, Statistics.
This level would also be satisfied by completion of: VCE Units 3 and 4 in Further Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics, or any International Baccalaureate maths unit.
- VCE Year 12 level – is completion of units/courses equivalent to Further Mathematics Units 3 and 4 in the Victorian Certificate of Education. You may have covered topics such as: Data analysis and Recursion and financial modelling.
- VCE Year 12 Higher level - is completion of units/courses equivalent to Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4 or Specialist Mathematics Units 3 and 4 in the Victorian Certificate of Education. You may have covered topics such as: Functions and graphs; Algebra; Calculus; Probability and statistics.
This level would also be satisfied by completion of International Baccalaureate units: Mathematics SL, Mathematics HL, Further Mathematics HL, or, Monash units such as ECC1550 Introduction to quantitative skills for social sciences (recommended if you are intending to study commerce/business related units), or MTH1010 Functions and their applications.
