Entry Requirements

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with a major or minor* in finance with at least a high credit (65%) average or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA).
An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with a major in finance with at least a high credit (65%) average, or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA), from a Certified Financial Analysts (CFA) Institute affiliated university
OR
an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with a major in finance with at least a high credit (65%) average or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) and an Australian graduate certificate / honours degree (or equivalent)
OR
an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with a major in finance with at least a high credit (65%) average or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) and two years relevant professional experience**
OR
an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with a major in finance and having passed the level I CFA examination or equivalent membership of a recognised professional finance program.
*A minor is at least four units (equivalent to 24 Monash credit points).
** Applicants applying on the basis of work experience are required to provide a detailed curriculum vitae, outlining their employment history and professional experience.

Requirements

The course comprises 72 credit points structured in two parts: Part A. Mastery knowledge (48 credit points) and Part B. Electives (24 credit points). If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete Part A and Part B. If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete Part A only.Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.

a. Core units
You must complete the following five units (30 credit points):
- ACF5130 Financial statement analysis and business valuation
- BFF5270 Funds management
- BFF5300 Case studies in finance*
- BFF5520 Advanced foundations of finance
- BFF5525 Quantitative and data analysis in Python
* This capstone unit incorporates the application of research principles including research methods applicable to the finance professional's field of work.
b. Specialist studies
You must complete three units (18 credit points) from one of the following specialist studies, which includes a compulsory unit.
Investment banking
You must complete BFF5580 and two further units from this specialist study.
- BFF5333 Infrastructure and project finance
- BFF5340 Applied derivatives
- BFF5580 Merger and acquisitions
- BFF5250 Applied corporate finance
- ECC5901 Macroeconomics
Asset management
You must complete BFF5340 and two further units from this specialist study.
- BFF5340 Applied derivatives
- BFX5260 Treasury and financial markets
- BFF5555 Financial machine learning
- BFF5541 Fixed income investments
- ECC5901 Macroeconomics
Financial technology and sustainability
You must complete BFF5370 and BFF5510 and one further unit from this specialist study.
- BFF5370 Fintech
- BEX5200 Climate change and carbon management strategies
- BFF5510 Sustainable finance
- BFF5555 Financial machine learning
You must complete 24 credit points of electives at either level 4 or 5 from the Faculty of Business and Economics, which could include study tours, consulting projects or industry placements. In addition, units may be selected from across the University as long as you have met the prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolling in the units.
To align with professional practice and facilitate sitting for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exams, it is recommended that you complete electives from units not already completed in Part A, or from the following list as long as the prerequisites are met and there are no other restrictions on enrolment:
