Undergraduate industry placements

Want to get hands-on experience while you study, and open up new possibilities for your career? Then an industry placement (internship) might be for you!

- Available to domestic, and international students (some restrictions may apply)
- Can be paid or unpaid depending on the industry partner (Monash Sourced placements are not paid)
- Available in a wide range of host organisations, including for profit and not-for-profit
- Placements are 15, 30 or 60 days over a 8, 10 or 12 week period
- Placement includes academic and work supervisor assessment activities
- Students can find their own industry placements and projects, but they MUST be approved by the IE Team and Academic Coordinators as part of the application process to ensure they meet the unit requirements and Monash University guidelines.
- An industry placement unit(s) counts as either a capstone unit and/or elective unit(s) in your degree.
- You must have completed 96 credit points (16 units) of study by the start of internship commencement.
- You must have an appropriate number of capstone and/or elective units left in your course.
- If you are considering submitting a Monash or Student Sourced application to undertake an IE subject as part of your final set of subjects for your degree, please note this is a highly competitive process and there is no guarantee your application will be successful. Please ensure you consider other units to enrol into if your application is unsuccessful.

Industry placement View

Want to get hands on experience while you study, and open up new possibilities for your career? Then an industry placement might be right for you!

There are three sets of BEX units covering industry placements. These are summarised below:

BEX3024	60 days	24 credit points	5 days per week over 12 weeks

*Please note the unit codes BEX3106 and BEX3112 are for students who have already completed a 6 or 12 credit point placement.

Students have two options in sourcing a placement. Students may find their own placement or they may apply to Monash to find a placement for them. Placements may be local, interstate or overseas. Please note that the IE program is highly competitive and there is no guarantee that every student submitting an application will be successful.

Eligibility

Completion of 96 credit points (16 units) of your degree by the time you commence your placement (16 units). You cannot apply with fewer than 72 credit points (12 units).
An appropriate number of capstone/electives in their course (i.e. 1 for BEX 3006/3106, 2 for BEX 3012/3112 or 4 for BEX3024).

Assessment

Academic induction to be completed in week 1 (Online and recorded).

Tasks

Quiz – Graduate capitals evaluation (10% at the start of placement)
Quiz – Resilience and work attitudes (10% at the start of placement)
Team project (20% at the end of placement)
E-folio (50% at the end of placement)
Evaluations (10% at the end of placement)

Application process

Students are required to make a formal application to undertake these units.

All students should supply the following information during the application process:

Contribution expected to be made to the organisation
Expected gains for the student from undertaking the placement or project
How the placement relates to the student’s degree or major discipline area

Students finding their own placement will also need to supply the following information:

The placement role
Company details (name, location etc.)
Supervisor details (name, contact information). If overseas, this needs to an English-speaker
Starting and finishing dates

Where students find their own placement, it should be in a business-related role, preferably in the student’s major discipline area. Student-led placements are assessed and approved by the academic coordinators to ensure they meet unit requirements.

2026 Application dates

You’ll have to complete your internship within the approved academic intakes. Take a look at the application dates below to find the best fit for your schedule.

Monash Business School units are not available in Trimester 2 (T2-58) and Summer B (SSB-02) – make sure you review the Handbook to check that your chosen unit is offered during your preferred intake.

Eligibility to graduate

Please note, internships or placements that extend beyond the teaching period may delay the release of your results for the unit. This may mean you are not eligible to graduate until the following ceremony.

Results for all completed BEX units are released on the university’s official release date.

International student visa holders

All international student visa holders must comply with the work limitations specified on their student visa.

Your IE experience may count towards your work limitation – please check this website for specific information about IE and visa conditions.
