Diversity Equity and Inclusion in the Technology Industry: The ‘making’ of inclusion in the everyday working of design teams

This project seeks to investigate the processes that take place between diverse hiring and inclusion in teams engaged in technology design. Understanding the everyday ‘doing’ of inclusion will provide clarity as to the gap between the current industry discourse on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and its practice in tech organisations.

This project will rely on the qualitative ethnographic method to understand work experiences of members of design teams and discourse analysis to unpack the language tech companies use to frame their DEI policies. This research aims to offer valuable insights for the creation of robust, effective, future DEI policy.

“...drawing more women into design - the configuration of artefacts - is not only an equal employment opportunity issue, but is also crucially about how the world we live in is shaped, and for whom. We live in a technological culture, a society that is constituted by science and technology, and so the politics of technology is integral to the renegotiation of gender power relations”  - Professor Dr. Judy Wajcman
