Rules & Eligibility

Rules

  • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.
  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or movement) and is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

Eligibility

To be eligible for 3MT, you must:

  • Be an active and attending PhD and Professional Doctorate Research (program composed of at least 2/3 research and eligible for RTP) candidate (including if your thesis is under submission);
  • Have successfully passed your confirmation milestone by the date of your first presentation in the competition;
  • Be an enrolled candidate for the entire time you are active within the competition (this includes candidates whose thesis is under submission). If you complete your degree while still active in the competition, you will need to withdraw.

Ineligible for 3MT are:

  • PhD and Professional Doctorate Research graduates;
  • PhD and Professional Doctorate Research candidates on a leave of absence;
  • Students enrolled in Masters (MPhil and coursework) and Professional Doctorate (coursework) programs.
